First Baptist Church of Tulsa

Meet Dave McPherson: Candidate for Minister of Discipleship

Dave McPherson was born and raised in a Christian family, and grew up in the Phoenix metro area in Arizona. During his upbringing, he and his family were actively involved in the local church. Dave put his faith in Jesus Christ at a very young age.

As a young adult, Dave felt God calling him to a life of ministry. Pursuant of this call, Dave earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Theological Studies from Grand Canyon University and then a Master of Divinity from George W. Truett Seminary at Baylor. While attending seminary, God brought Dave and his wife Ginger together. Dave is a gifted musician and served as worship pastor at Coryell Community Church during his three years in seminary.

After seminary, Dave and Ginger returned to the Phoenix area to serve at Vineyard Church and later a Vineyard Church plant. While in Phoenix, they welcomed three beautiful children — Addie (5), Christopher (3), and Jayme (1). For the past four years, Dave has been serving as associate pastor at Wellspring Church, a new church plant with the North American Mission Board in the Phoenix area. Dave has led the worship ministry and built the adult discipleship ministry groups, which have grown from one to 14 groups.

Several months ago, Dave began to sense God leading him toward a new ministry opportunity. Several circumstances as well as a need to be closer to Ginger’s family in Missouri, led him to First Baptist Tulsa. He is excited for the possibility of helping to foster a culture of making disciples, and to join together with the staff at First Baptist in Tulsa. See MoreSee Less

On Sunday, we will extend an invitation for a new minister of discipleship to join our staff. Dave McPherson currently serves as associate pastor at Wellspring Church in Goodyear, Arizona, near Phoenix. Wellspring is a church plant of the North American Mission Board, and Dave has served at this church for four years. He oversees both the worship and discipleship areas of the church. He wants to join our staff to focus more on the area of discipleship, which is his true passion.

Dave and his wife Ginger (and their three kids) will join us this weekend. The deacons will interview Dave at 4:30 Sunday afternoon. The First Baptist Tulsa family is invited to meet with Dave at 6:00 Sunday evening in the Fellowship Hall for a special called business meeting. Dave will share his faith story. You will be invited to ask questions and then vote to extend the opportunity for Dave to join our church staff. We will follow our meeting with a reception to give you the opportunity to meet and talk with Dave personally.

Dave has put together a brief video to introduce himself in advance of Sunday. Please take a few minutes to watch.

We also want to thank the advisory team who worked alongside the church staff and personnel committee to identify and interview Dave: Cory Kebert, Aaron Temple, Greg Birnie, Mary Easley and Jackie Wagnon.Candidate for Discpleship Minister at First Baptist Tulsa See MoreSee Less

This morning, Deron shared the total amount we raised on Others First Sunday. Our First Baptist Tulsa family truly gave with compassion, and we committed to $1.1 million that will go toward relieving the $2.5 million of debt remaining on our new children’s building! That means we are able to build at least one Compassion center and with a few more gifts remaining, we are only about $40,000 away from building our second center. We will continue to share more details around the Compassion centers as we have them. Thank you for praying and giving sacrificially! 💜 See MoreSee Less
